Built for Lethbridge wind

Wind first, then hail and chinooks. Roofing the southwest corner.

Ask anyone in Lethbridge about the weather and the wind comes up first. West of the city, toward Pincher Creek and the Crowsnest Pass, chinooks come straight off the mountains, hail reaches this part of the province too, and in 2017 fire burned through Waterton. This is what each one means for a roof, and where an Interlock® aluminum roof stops being the answer.

Wind

Gusts that find every loose edge

On January 19, 2021 a gust of 130 km/h was recorded in Lethbridge, Lethbridge News Now reported, and more than 2,000 customers on the north side lost power. Wind like that starts on asphalt at the tabs and the ridge caps. Interlock panels hook into one another on all four sides, the fasteners are covered by the next course, and wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification.

Hail

Hail, and what the rating does and doesn't mean

In September 2025 Insurance Bureau of Canada said hailstorms had caused about $6 billion of insured damage in Alberta over the previous five years. Interlock's Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products. A rating is a test result, not a promise: large hail can dent aluminum, and the material warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in).

Chinooks

Mountain wind, thaw and refreeze

Around Pincher Creek strong chinook winds often blow off the mountains, and a frozen winter day can turn mild in a few hours before the cold comes back. Each thaw sends meltwater down the roof and each freeze locks it in again. Aluminum absorbs no water, so that cycle has nothing in the panel to split, and the finish is covered by the 30 Year Alunar® Coating Warranty.

Wildfire

Waterton, September 2017

Parks Canada reports that the Kenow Wildfire established itself in Waterton Lakes National Park on September 11, 2017 and burned 19,303 hectares of the park, destroying the visitor centre and the Crandell Mountain campground. For houses near Waterton, Twin Butte and the forested Crowsnest Pass, FireSmart Alberta recommends Class A roofing. We can build yours as Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly, with two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood under the panels. No roof is fireproof.

Permits

Re-roofing inside the city

The City of Lethbridge lists re-roofing, with painting and same-size window replacement, as work that does not need a building permit. Repairing or altering the structure is permit work, and the City suggests speaking with a Safety Codes Officer before you start. Outside the city the county or town rules apply, and we check them for your address.

Snow

Where the snow lands

Snow slides off aluminum in slabs instead of sitting on the roof, so wherever a slab would come down on steps, a deck or a parked car, snow guards go into the quote. Ice dams start under the roof, when attic heat melts snow that refreezes at the cold eaves. The material warranty excludes ice damming, so we look at insulation and ventilation with you instead of claiming the roof will cure it.

Why Lethbridge homeowners pick aluminum

A roof for a windy city. Put on by the company that answers for it.

Our crews

Installed by us, not handed off

Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. sends its own crews to every Lethbridge job. The person who measures your roof and the company named on your labour warranty are the same Alberta business, with its office in Calgary.

Profiles

Slate first, by a wide margin

Slate is the most chosen profile in our Lethbridge job book, well ahead of the legacy Interlock Shingle that many older roofs in the city carry. Today the choice is Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile or Standing Seam, in nine colours, on any roof with a slope of 3/12 or more.

Tear-off

What stays and what comes off

Cedar shakes and shingles, concrete tile and natural slate always come off first. A single layer of asphalt can stay under the new roof only if our inspection finds it suitable; a second layer cannot. The written quote says which applies before you sign.

Weight

Light on an older frame

The panels weigh roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre, a small fraction of concrete tile, so an older bungalow or a farmhouse does not have to carry tile-like weight. We still look at the deck and the rafters during the inspection.

Warranties

Two warranties, from two companies

Interlock Roofing, the manufacturer, covers the aluminum and its finish under the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty for as long as the original purchaser owns the home, transferable once, workmanship excluded. Our own 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty covers the installation.

Farmyards

The house, the shop and the barn

Around Raymond, Cardston and the County of Warner the house is often one roof among several. The shop, garage and barn can take the same profile and colour, each priced as its own line, so you can roof them together or one at a time.

Recycled

Up to 95% recycled aluminum

And the last tear-off your house is likely to need.

Straight answers

Lethbridge roofing questions, straight answers.

All of our answers ↗

Who installs Interlock metal roofs in Lethbridge?

Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd., with its own crews. We are the certified Interlock® roofing contractor for Alberta, founded in 1999, and our only office is in Calgary. Interlock Roofing makes the panels in Canada at its plant in Delta, BC. We are BBB Accredited with an A+ rating, Baeumler Approved, and a 2026 GuildQuality GuildMaster Award winner.

Do I need a building permit to re-roof in Lethbridge?

Not inside the city, as a rule. The City of Lethbridge lists re-roofing among the jobs that do not need a building permit. Repairing or altering the structure, for example rebuilding rotten decking or rafters, is permit work, and the City recommends checking with a Safety Codes Officer first. Outside the city, the county, town or village where you live sets the rules. We confirm what applies to your address before work starts.

Will a metal roof stand up to Lethbridge wind and hail?

It is designed for both, within limits. Wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification. For hail, Interlock's Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products. No roof is hail-proof: the material warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in), and storm damage is a matter for your home insurance. Ask your insurer how it treats an impact-rated roof; we can give you the listing.

Which communities does lethbridgeroofing.com cover?

Lethbridge and Lethbridge County, Coalhurst, Picture Butte, Nobleford and Monarch; Raymond, Warner, New Dayton and Coutts; Cardston, Glenwood and Spring Coulee; Fort Macleod and Granum; Pincher Creek, Twin Butte and Waterton; and Blairmore, Coleman and Burmis in the Crowsnest Pass. The rest of Southern Alberta is on calgarymetalroofing.com, with the same company, office and warranties.
